Because God’s gift isn’t meant for the shelf
When we accept Christ, we’re given the greatest gift: salvation. Paul calls it the “indescribable gift” in 2 Corinthians 9:15. It’s free to us, but it cost Jesus everything. The strange thing is, sometimes we don’t really know what to do with it once we have it.
It’s kind of like when someone gives you something really valuable, and you smile and say thank you, but deep down, you have no clue what it actually does. So we do one of two things. We set it on the shelf and admire it from time to time. Or we tuck it away in the closet because we know it’s too important to get rid of, but we aren’t sure how to use it.
But the gift of salvation was never meant to be stored away or just admired from a distance. It was meant to be opened, explored, and lived out. That’s where sanctification comes in. Philippians 2:12–13 says, “Work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to His good purpose.” Notice that: we don’t work for salvation (that’s the gift already given), but we work out salvation…like unwrapping it, setting it up, plugging it in, and letting it run. Sanctification is what happens when we begin to learn how to live in it.
As we walk with Jesus, the Holy Spirit shows us how this gift changes our everyday lives. He convicts us, teaches us, and grows us in love, patience, kindness, and all those other fruits that don’t come naturally. Little by little, we become holy…not in a “perfect on day one” way, but in a “bit by bit” transformation..
The gift of salvation is both a moment and a process. In a moment, we receive it. Over a lifetime, we learn to use it. It stops being something on the shelf or hidden in the closet, and it becomes the very thing that changes how we live.
Salvation isn’t some expensive gift to sit on a shelf or fine china locked away for special occasions. It’s more like your favorite coffee mug—part of your daily rhythm until you can’t imagine life without it.
Reflection Questions:
- In what ordinary, daily rhythms could I invite Jesus to be more present?
- What part of sanctification (patience, forgiveness, obedience, holiness) feels hardest for me right now, and how can I trust the Spirit to work in it?

Prayer
Lord, thank You for the gift of salvation. Forgive me for the times I’ve left it sitting on the shelf instead of letting it shape my life. Teach me how to unwrap it daily. Help me to lean on Your Spirit as You grow me, change me, and make me more like Jesus. I don’t want to just keep the gift—I want to live in it. Amen.
